Classic movie Cadillac needs major restoration

How far would you go to make sure that one of your favorite pieces of history was maintained? Well, for some movie buffs, that favorite piece of history is the ECTO-1 from the Ghostbusters movies. As it turns out, the 1959 Cadillac ambulance used in the sequel of the film is in pretty rough shape, as it remains unattended on the Sony pictures lot. The love for the car, known as the ECTO-1A, has sparked an online petition to restore the ECTO-1 from Ghostbusters 2.

As you can imagine, a 1959 Cadillac that hasn’t had much going on since the 1989 release of Ghostbusters 2 is probably in pretty rough shape. As Cadillac fans here at Palmen Buick GMC Cadillac, we have to say that we would love to see the classic Caddy be brought back to its proudest form. Just finding a car of that age in good condition in this day and age can be tricky.

If you are a big fan of the movie, then you know that in the original, the car is found as a potential vehicle for the team to use. But, it needs some work. In the words of Ray Stanz in the film, the car needs “suspension work and shocks, brakes, brake pads, lining, steering box, transmission, rear end, new rings, mufflers, a little wiring.” The cost for such repairs was priced at $4,800. Unfortunately, in 2013 reality, the current ECTO-1A will probably need a bit more work than this cost could pay for. And by a bit, we mean ‘a lot.’

No matter the outcome of the attempt to restore the ECTO-1 from Ghostbusters 2, it is intriguing the lengths fans will go for some of their favorite movie items.

We might not have a 1959 Cadillac available on the lot here at Palmen, but we do have some impressive new and used Cadillacs to show off. Check us out – and let us know if you joined the ECTO-1 petition!
